Dental Bridges in Arlington Heights
A dental bridge is a prosthesis used to replace a missing tooth or a series of missing teeth. Tooth loss may be due to removal, an accident or an oral infection.
Here are the three main types of dental bridges available for you:
Traditional bridges
Traditional bridges are supported and held in place by a pair of crowns, one each on the teeth on either side of the gap being filled. They are made of porcelain fused to metal, and are arguably the most popular type of dental bridges.
Traditional bridges are only used when the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap being filled are strong and healthy.
Cantilever Bridges
These are used when the gap being filled has an adjacent tooth only on one side. In some situations, such as when front teeth are involved, cantilever bridges are used even when the gap has adjacent teeth on either side.
These bridges are not recommended on back teeth as the bite pressure on the prosthesis may cause too much stress on the support tooth causing it to break or rock and weaken, or shake out of position.
Maryland bonded bridges
Maryland bonded bridges are also known as resin-bonded bridges, and are used on patients who don't want adjacent teeth adjusted or reshaped in any way. Most people who go for front tooth replacement prefer this type of bridge as it is almost unnoticeable to onlooker as long as the prosthesis blends well with your natural teeth.
Maryland bonded bridges are supported and held in place by porcelain or metal wings that are attached to the back of the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap.
